Special Report: Missing Sabrina

The St. Petersburg Times (9/09/01) - Missing Sabrina - Four years after their daughter vanished, this much is known about Steve and Marlene Aisenberg: they are victims of police bungling and an abuse of power. But what about the ultimate question: Did they do it?
The St. Petersburg Times (9/10/01) - Bugged - Less than three weeks after Sabrina Aisenberg disappeared, detectives had strong suspicions about her parents -- but weak evidence. They decided on a new strategy, but they had to get a judge's permission to do it.
The St. Petersburg Times (9/11/01) - Undone - The government announced to the world that it had caught them on tape, saying things like, "The baby's dead and buried! It was found dead because you did it!" How could anyone read that and think they could be innocent?

The Houston Chronicle. The following article appeared today. I will print the article in case the page changes:

Jackson's album aids search for missing kids.

Michael Jackson is expected to help in the search for a Tampa, Fla., girl who vanished from her crib as an infant nearly four years ago. Jackson's new album will include a song about missing children and is expected to have a picture of Sabrina Aisenberg on the inside cover. The Center for Missing and Exploited Children says Jackson picked Sabrina and several other missing children to feature on the album. Steve and Marlene Aisenberg say someone snatched their 5-month-old daughter while they slept in their suburban Tampa home in November 1997. They believe she is alive somewhere, being raised by surrogate parents. Police, who say over the years they have exhausted hundreds of leads and found no trace of the chubby-faced child, believe she is dead and that her parents know what happened to her.

The Tampa Tribune (In Brief) - Prosecutors get time for Aisenberg claim.

TAMPA -- A federal judge has given prosecutors more time to respond to a claim by Steve and Marlene Aisenberg seeking reimbursement for their legal costs.
The Aisenbergs filed the claim in U.S. District Court on March 26 seeking more than $2 million under a law known as the Hyde Amendment. It allows victims of bad-faith prosecution to recoup attorney fees.
The Aisenbergs had been charged with lying to authorities about the 1997 disappearance of their 5-month-old daughter, Sabrina, from the family's home in Valrico.
But prosecutors dropped the case in February after a magistrate found that detectives lied during their investigation.
The government's answer to the Aisenbergs' claim had been due Friday, but U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday moved its deadline to July 2.

May 17, 2001.

St. Pete Times - Aisenberg attorney considers a new job

The Tampa Tribune (In Brief) - Delay Requested In Aisenberg Claim.

TAMPA -- The U.S. attorney's office is asking for more time to respond to a claim filed by attorneys for Steve and Marlene Aisenberg seeking reimbursement for their legal costs.
The Aisenbergs filed a claim in U.S. District Court on March 26 seeking more than $2 million under a law known as the Hyde Amendment. It allows victims of bad-faith prosecutions to recoup attorneys fees.
Prosecutors dropped the case against the Aisenbergs in February after a magistrate threw out key evidence and ruled Hillsborough County detectives lied during their investigation.
The government's response is due May 25, but prosecutors are asking U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday for an extension until July 2.
They cite the complexity of the case, combined with a new administration in Washington and an interim U.S. attorney here.
Attorneys for the Aisenbergs are not opposing the delay.

WTSP Channel 10 News - Aisenbergs seek millions of dollars to cover attorneys fees.
WTVT Fox 13 - Aisenbergs Seek $1.7 Million.

The couple accused of lying to investigators over the 1997 disappearance of their baby girl are seeking nearly $1.7 million from the federal government. Steve and Marlene Aisenberg say lies and misrepresentations by county detectives and federal prosecutors entitle them to the reimbursements. The Aisenbergs are using a 1997 federal law known as the Hyde Amendment as a basis for their claim. Earlier this year a federal judge dismissed the indictments after it became obvious secretly recorded tapes would not to be admitted as evidence in a trial against them.

March 24, 2001.

WTVT Fox 13 - Aisenberg Court Costs.

The clock is ticking for Steve and Marlene Aisenberg to recoup legal fees. That's after prosecutors dropped charges of lying to a grand jury against the parents of missing baby Sabrina. Now, they're eligible to be reimbursed for their legal expenses under the Hyde Amendment. Monday is the deadline for them to file the necessary paperwork. Experts say the Aisenbergs' defense had to cost millions.
