Notes for ELIZABETH "LIZZY" KATE GARRETT: Lizzie's father hated Luke. He didn't want his daughter marrying a Yankee.
She was disowned for marrying him. However, it is strange that he had these
views because his sister Dartha Ann Garrett married the brother of William
Stephen Williams - this being Jordan Gillison Williams. Soon after Lizzie's
marriage to Luke, her parents, Wesley Cyrus Garrett and Susan Lancaster Harper,
moved to Oklahoma. Lizzie's mother was 1/2 Cherokee Indian and she was trying to
find the rest of her family, without success. Lizzie and Luke Marvel were found
living in Oklahoma for a short while. Ida was estranged from her family, just
like her mother was. Her sister, Jane Marvel thought she should marry William,
this causing a big riff in the family over it. Ida smoked a corn cob pipe, but
she insisted she didn't smoke, but would come out of the bathroom and it would
be filled with smoke when she came out. William always loved to play cards. He
also played the fiddle and the piano. Ida was a beautiful singer. It killed Ida
when Leo Roy (Buddy) died. He was her favorite. She didn't last too much longer
after he passed. She soon after passed away, too. William had hardening of the
arteries and was very absent minded because of it. He died in 1972.

Notes for DALTE EDGAR MARVEL: Dalte took his responsibilities seriously when it came to the farm and the oil wells. He would work during any kind of weather and often rode his horse to the fields early morning and worked until nightfall. He needed the help of his sons to bring in the crops. They often missed school to help farm the land. Dalta was a good ole country boy. He even had on his mailbox "Mr. Democrat". He got religion later in his life. He and Glennis Marvel, his son, worked together later in a shipping yard in Evansville, Indiana.
Dalte once wrote a letter to the local newspaper that went as follows: I am a subscriber to your paper, Mr. Editor, and I read the Tobe Clipp article about the Democrats. I am wondering what has happened to him? I wonder if he has drowned himself in Hoss Creek? If he has, please embalm him and preserve him well. Stand him up in the corner of the Press basement so the future generations can see what a Republican looked like in 1958. The lousy old pup! P.S. I'll be watching to see if this is printed.
Notes for AMY CELESTE HOHLBAUGH: Amy Marvel had the patience of a saint. She always showed lots of love to her children. She was a refined and dainty person. She took care of her son, Robert Marvel, which would be a real challenge. Her and her husband, Dalte, were complete opposites.
Amy Celeste Hohlbaugh Marvel was born October 26, 1890. She was a remarkable woman who loved her husband and children to obsession. She had three children who predeceased her - Myrtle Lee, Edna Lucille and Robert. She remembered them each year at their birthdays. It just goes to show how difficult it is to deal with the death of a child.
Amy was a hard working woman who began her morning before 6am and was to bed late at night. She made quilts, hooked her own rugs, canned peaches, corn, tomatoes, jelly and made bread and apple butter. When her washer was out, she washed her families clothes by hand and hung them out to dry. Amy often had sick headaches that sent her to bed. She wrote of her "kiddos" daily in her journals. She quoted the Bible, said prayers, told jokes, and recorded her favorite poems. Amy made Thanksgiving special. She usually served cranberries, chicken dressing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The Marvel men usually went hunting.
Her "kiddos" were hard working and she worried about them constantly. The boys walked or rode horses to school. They were sick a lot and missed school a lot, however, in the 1940s it was important to gather crops and get farm work done. Working in bitter cold and snow contributed to their illnesses. Amy's greatest joy was her "kiddos". She waited patiently for letters from them and wrote them often. She worried about her "kiddos" going out into the world. Her pet name for Irma was "Sis" or "Sissy". Amy would have been shocked at how the children in the 1990's went out into the world. Her children were wonderful and hard working. The children of today have too much given to them and are afraid of the work that Amy's children did.
Her husband, Dalte, rode a horse to work in the morning whether he was working in the fields or the oil fields. He wasn't quite as sensitive toward his wife as he should have been when the kiddos were growing up, but later in life that changed.
In 1941, Amy had a poem that she loved as follows:
"Here is to the memory that time can not erase,
No one can take your place,
Or half so dear a face."
One year she quoted the following regarding her family:
"This is my hope and prayer - that we may always be able to spend Christmas
in the D.E. Marvel home each and every year."

Theodore graduated from White City, Kansas, High School in 1921 and then studied two years at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. He performed in Chautauqua and Lyceum courses before continuing his education at the University of Chicago where he received a degree in anthropology in 1932. For years he was a member of the Radio City Music Hall Men's Glee Club in New York. It was here he met Gladys, then known as Nina Galovina, a ballet dancer at Radio City Music Hall. Later he was in radio and television work in New York, at the time of his retirement he was news director of a radio station in Riverhead, Long Island. His last residence was in Wading River, Long Island, New York.

He was married to Gladys Winifred GODBY (daughter of William Herbert GODBY and Jeanette BROOKE) on 24 Feb 1945 in Englewood, New Jersey.
