Notes for PRESTON COLUMBUS SHELTON: Death certificate states Preston C. Shelton died June 18,1910 at 4 am of "Cholera Morbus (or Acute Dysentery) complicated by "Chronic Disease of the Heart". He was born in Kentucky and lived in Illinois for 50 years. He was buried at Brown Cemetery on June 19, 1910 at 11 am. Dr. Edwin Roberts signed the certificate on June 30, 1910. His widow's pension application state he was enlisted as a private on Nov. 17, 1867 at Shawneetown, Ill in the 87th Illinois Voluntary Infantry, then transferred to the 18th Illinois Vol. Infantry and honorably discharged Nov 20, 1868. He fought for the Union. He and Ellen Marvel, born in Mt. Erie, Ill were married on Nov. 14, 1867 by David Holmes, JP. Ellen hired W.F. Walters to prosecute the claim on the pension. Her signature was an "X" so I think that she probably could not read or write. Let me know if this information proves or disproves that our Ellens are the same.

118. ORPHA MARVEL (GEORGE, ELISHA, THOMAS, THOMAS M., JOHN, THOMAS MARVELL, JOHN, JOHN, THOMAS, JOHN) was born Apr 15, 1855, and died 1954. She married HARVEY HENDERSON SHELTON Apr 13, 1881, son of WILLIAM SHELTON and MARTHA RAMSEY. He was born Apr 05, 1846 in Henderson, KY.

Notes for HARVEY HENDERSON SHELTON: Harvey Henderson Shelton was born in Henderson, Kentucky on April 5, 1846. He was left an orphan at an early age. With his brothers and sisters he came to Illinois at the age of seven years and located in Wayne County, where he has made his home for the greater part of his life.

During the Civil War, he served his country as a member of the 155th and 36th Illinois Regiments and the 6th Illinois Calvary. Honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Martin on July 23, 1871. Two children were born of this union, one son Joseph died in infancy. His wife passed on to the other world on February 25, 1875.

He again united to Sarah J. Harris, March 18, 1878. One son came to bless this union, then again he was called upon to give up his companion in death, August 4, 1879.

On April 13, 1880 he was united in marriage to Orpha Marvel. This union was blessed with 9 children, six sons and three daughters.

Many years ago he was converted and united with the Mt. Erie M.E. Church. About ten years ago he removed his membership to the Cisne M.E. Church. He survived by his faithful companion, six sons, W.H. of Dato, Ark., George, of Leachville, Ark., Milliard of Lockport, Ill., James of Dayton, Ky., and John and Leonard, of Cisne; three daughters, Jennie Ping and Lulu Haney of Memphis, Tenn., and Mary Robinson of Dayton, Ky. Internment was in the Cisne Cemetery.

Notes for ULYSSES S. GRANT MARVEL: U.S. Grant Marvel ran away from home at age 14 after the death of his mother, Ellen. He was a railroad man. They had 12 children.

He was a railroad man, restless and always on the move, which seems very American to me. Family legend has it that his father served under Grant in the Civil War and named his firstborn in honor of his old commander. After the war, he homesteaded on the Blue River in Kansas, where Grant grew up. Grant was 13 or 14 when his mother died and he fought bitterly -- family legend, again -- with his stepmother. He is said to have run away at age 14, somehow finding his way to Springfield, Missouri, where he was hired by the railroad (probably the St. Louis & Iron Mountain).

His railroad career lasted until retirement in 1933. Its most dramatic moments came, It was told, when he was conductor on one of the trains that took the Colorado State Militia down to Ludlow, an event that culminated in the infamous Ludlow Massacre. U.S. Grant Marvel had been a staunch union man and his participation in that event cast a deep shadow over his life.

He served churches in Dunavant, Centropolis, Kansas City, Wamego, Topeka, Clay Center, White City, Valley Falls, Burton, Oxford, and Argonia in Kansas and in Douglas, Arizona. He had literary talent and a beautiful baritone voice as well as being a spellbinding speaker. His death followed an operation for appendicitis. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Argonia, Kansas and burial was in the local cemetery. He died on 21 Sep 1930 in Wesley Hospital, Wichita, Kansas.

He was married to Katie May RUSHMORE (daughter of Henry C. RUSHMORE and Martha LANDON) on 30 Aug 1904 in Kansas City, Kansas. Katie May RUSHMORE died on 20 Aug 1968 in Wichita, Kansas. She was born Unk. After the death of George, Katie helped the children finish their education. She worked in WA, DC, for several years during WW II; later she served as a housemother in a Wichita, KS Nurses' dormitory. She was actively engaged in church work. Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON ROGERS MARVEL: There is a skeleton in George Rogers/Marvel's closet. It seems he married the first time to a woman named Mary A. Meece, who had a daughter by a previous marriage named Pearl Marie Fenton. After having several children by Mary (Shelby and Della), he runs off and marries his wife's daughter, Pearl. His name was George Washington Marvel. When he ran off with the daughter, he changed his name to George Washington Rogers. George and Pearl had 13 children named: Harold Maxwell Rogers, Logan Grey Rogers, Ellen Belle Rogers, Grace Evelyn Rogers, Wiley A. Rogers, William Wilson Rogers, Jack Norman Rogers, Clarence Darrow Rogers, Myrtle Rose Rogers, Robert Green Ingersoll Rogers, Stella Maxwell Rogers, Ola Maude Rogers and Blaine Franklin Rogers. It kind of reminds me of a joke: MY OWN GRANDPA!

There as a man who committed suicide and left the following note: "I married a widow with a grown daughter. My father fell in love with my stepdaughter and married her, thus becoming my son-in-law; and my stepdaughter became my mother because she was my father's wife. "My wife gave birth to a son, who was, of course, my father's brother-in-law and also my uncle, for he was the brother of my step-mother. My father's wife because the mother of a son, who was, of course, my brother, and also my grandchild, for he was the son of my daughter. Accordingly my wife was my grandmother because she was my father's wife."

Marriage Notes for GEORGE MARVEL and MARY MEECE: George Rogers Marvel left Mary Fenton and changed his name to George Washington Rogers. He married his 14 year old step-daughter, Pearl Marie Fenton. after George's death, Pearl Marie Fenton Rogers married Daniel L. Carmichael, the father of her son-in-law, David. Daniel and Pearl are buried at Ingram Cemetery.
